Not Urgent… Until It Is

Not Urgent… Until It Is
Hi,
I hope you have had a great week!
Back in 2008, I found myself in a room in Brussels, representing Ireland, in conversations about youth policy.
One moment from that time has stayed with me.
Someone quietly named a trend. People were living longer. Fewer children were being born. The gap between those working and those retiring was beginning to shift—bringing with it the quiet but growing strain on economies, healthcare systems, and the generations carrying that weight.
It wasn’t urgent then. Just something noted… and mostly left alone.
Seventeen years on, it hasn’t gone away. If anything, it’s grown.
I see a similar pattern in my coaching. People train, get certified, and step forward with good intent. Organizations launch initiatives hoping for movement. But real change rarely follows the pace we would like. It’s slower. Quieter. Often unseen at first. And when we miss that, the cost doesn’t disappear. It just shows up later.
Over these past months, I’ve sat with leaders reflecting on conversations they wish they’d had sooner… and people they wish they hadn’t lost. Not through lack of care, but because something deeper was rushed or overlooked.
Real change doesn’t come from adding more information. It comes from transformation, and that doesn’t begin in our plans. It begins with how we see.
When that shifts, something else begins to move. Gently at first. Then more steadily.
We start to imagine differently. To hold a picture of who we are becoming, even when very little has changed on the surface.
That’s often where the work starts.
Not dramatic.
Not loud.
But real.
Not loud.
But real.
So as you head into the weekend, maybe with a coffee in hand, here’s a simple invitation:
Where might a quiet shift begin in your life right now?
Choose one small way to experiment with this week, and notice what begins to change in your interactions. In doing so, you become an active participant in your own transformation.
Remember, most people wait for change to feel obvious. It rarely does.
Transformation isn’t a finish line. It’s a rhythm.
Have a great weekend,
Mark
