Leadership Coaching for Complex Change

Navigate change. See new possibilities. Lead without losing yourself.

Leadership coaching in Northern Ireland, the UK and internationally begins with a simple conviction: leaders need space to think, imagine and navigate change without losing themselves.

Leadership can be exhilarating. It can also be lonely.

When the landscape is changing, the decisions are difficult, and there is no obvious map for what comes next, leaders need more than another technique. They need space to think, someone who can ask the questions others cannot, and conversations that help them see possibilities they may have stopped seeing.

I’m Dr Mark Dunwoody, an international leadership coach, author and educator based in Northern Ireland. Alongside coaching leaders and organisations, I teach and supervise at postgraduate and doctoral level in change management, coaching and leadership. I work with senior leaders across the UK, Ireland, North America, Australia and internationally, helping them navigate complex change without losing themselves in the process.

When the old map no longer works

Most leaders don’t come to me because everything is falling apart. More often, something has changed. The organisation has grown. The role has become more complex. A transition is approaching. The team needs something different. Or the way of leading that worked brilliantly for the last ten years no longer seems enough for what comes next.

This is often the territory of adaptive change. The challenge cannot simply be solved by working harder or applying another familiar technique. Something needs to be seen differently.

Leadership coaching creates room to get above the noise. Together, we pay attention to what is happening, challenge assumptions, explore possibilities and turn insight into practical movement

Coaching from someone who understands change

My work sits at the intersection of leadership, coaching and organisational change.

Alongside coaching leaders internationally, I teach and supervise at postgraduate and doctoral level in change management, coaching and leadership. This academic work matters to me, but so does what happens when theory meets the reality of leading an organisation on a difficult Tuesday morning.

My approach brings those worlds together: rigorous thinking about change and leadership alongside decades of practical experience working with people and organisations navigating it.

I am interested not simply in helping leaders solve today’s problem, but in helping them develop the capacity, imagination and healthier rhythms they will need for whatever comes next.

Leadership coaching isn’t about giving you the answers

I don’t believe experienced leaders need another person telling them what to do. Most already have far more wisdom than they realise. The difficulty is finding enough space to hear it.

Good coaching creates the conditions for that wisdom to emerge. It helps you notice what you have stopped noticing, question assumptions that have quietly become fixed, imagine alternatives and decide what you want to do next.

I describe some of this as imaginal coaching: creating space between what is and what could be. I explore this approach more fully in my book, The Imaginal Coach, built around a simple conviction that has shaped much of my work: humans change through conversations.

Who I work with

I work particularly well with people carrying meaningful responsibility in environments where there isn’t an obvious answer.

Senior & Executive Leaders

Navigating complexity, responsibility, transition and significant decisions.

Founders & Organisational Leaders

Leading organisations through growth, uncertainty and change.

Church & Nonprofit Leaders

Leading missionally while developing sustainable ways of working and living.

Leadership Teams

Building adaptability, coaching cultures and the collective capacity to navigate change.

A different kind of leadership coaching

My approach to leadership coaching brings together three things that I believe matter deeply when we are leading in uncertain and changing environments.

Change

Not every leadership challenge can be solved by working harder or applying something that worked before. We pay attention to what is really changing, distinguish technical problems from adaptive challenges, and explore what the emerging situation might require from you.

Imagination

Change can narrow our field of vision until all we can see is the immediate problem. Coaching creates space to step back, challenge assumptions and recover the capacity to imagine possibilities that are not yet obvious.

Healthy Rhythms

I don’t believe making a meaningful contribution should require losing yourself in the process. We pay attention not only to what you are trying to achieve, but to the rhythms, relationships and practices that will enable you to sustain it.

Navigate change. Imagine what could be. Lead without losing yourself.

What does leadership coaching look like?

There is no off-the-shelf programme. We begin with a conversation about where you are, what is changing and what would make coaching genuinely useful.

Some leaders come with a particular transition, challenge or difficult decision. Others want a confidential thinking partner over a longer period as they lead through complexity and change.

My coaching is reflective, challenging and practical. I will ask questions, notice patterns, challenge assumptions and help you create enough space to see what might otherwise remain hidden. The goal isn’t simply to have an interesting conversation. It is to help you see more clearly and decide what you want to do next.

Most coaching takes place online, allowing me to work with leaders across Northern Ireland, Ireland, the UK and internationally.

Leadership Coaching in Northern Ireland, the UK and Internationally

I am based in Northern Ireland, but much of my working life has been international. I have lived and worked across different countries and cultures. Today I coach leaders and work with organisations across Ireland and the UK alongside longstanding relationships in the United States, Canada, Australia and elsewhere.

Most of my leadership coaching takes place online. That means geography doesn’t determine who you work with, while still making it possible for me to work in person with leaders, teams and organisations across Northern Ireland, Ireland and the wider UK.

Whether the challenge is organisational change, a leadership transition, building a healthier culture or simply creating space to think about what comes next, the starting point is the same: a good conversation.

Perhaps a conversation is the place to begin.

If you’re navigating change, carrying a difficult decision or simply sensing that the way you’ve been leading needs to evolve, we can have a conversation.

No elaborate process. Just an opportunity to explore what is happening, where you want to go and whether coaching might help.
