Book Update: Learning as I Go
Hi,
Last week, I got the second round of edits back from my wonderful editor, Stacey. This time, I didn’t end up in tears ;). Instead, I felt encouraged. As I read her notes, I was surprised to see how my scattered thoughts had come together and made sense.

Writing a book has been a humbling experience. It takes more detail and patience than I’m used to. But I’ve realized that sticking with something until it becomes clear is part of the process. It’s also reminded me that I’m always learning, even in the areas where I usually teach and coach.

A few weeks ago, I had a helpful talk with my friend Markus. He pointed out something that made me pause.

He said,

“Mark, the book you’re writing isn’t just for people who want to become coaches. It’s really for people who want to lead through coaching.”

The more I thought about what Markus said, the more I saw he was right. As I reread parts of my manuscript, I understood his point. Most of my work has been about helping people lead with a coaching mindset, whether they are coaches, mentors, teachers, parents, faith leaders, or CEOs. Coaching skills and attitudes aren’t just for professional coaches—they help all of us support others’ growth.

Realizing this felt freeing. It helped me see the book as more than just a guide for coaches. It could help anyone who wants to lead with curiosity, wisdom, and care for others’ growth.

I’m also glad I chose to self-publish. The process has turned into a real learning journey. I’ve had to learn new skills, like editing, layout, artwork, getting endorsements, and handling all the small details that turn a draft into a finished book. It’s pushed me in ways I didn’t expect, and I’m grateful for it.

If the book helps even one person see their life or leadership in a new way, all the effort will be worth it. I’ve already been invited to speak about some of the book’s themes at a few retreats and gatherings this year, which has given me great motivation to keep going.

A question for you this week: Where in your life might someone grow more if you chose to guide them through questions and encouragement rather than simply giving answers?

It’s a question I’m asking myself, too.

Have a great week!

Mark
P.S.
You shouldn’t be burning out. After working with me, you won’t?
Let’s have a relaxed, no-pressure call to explore your goals.

Opportunity to enrol in a Coaching & Leadership Doctorate
A few people have asked about the doctoral cohort I’m currently teaching. It’s designed for leaders who walk alongside individuals and teams, helping them move toward greater clarity, purpose, and action—developing deep listening, learning to ask catalytic questions, and gaining practical coaching approaches that work in real, complex contexts. If that’s of interest, you can find more details here.
